Roosters are organised, excellent time keepers and hard workers. They are faithful as friends, and very strongly family oriented. Despite this they can be somewhat headstrong, and not a little arrogant in giving advice, particularly of the sort that is not asked for! Although outwardly showy, at heart the rooster is somewhat insecure, by nature conservative and old fashioned.
The Chinese believe there are two types of rooster characters. The first is the sunrise/sunset rooster. Born during the sunset or sunrise hours, these are extrovert roosters who live for the moment. Money is seen as functional, its function being for spending - and they will spend with abandon. They are no strangers to overdrafts. The other group, those born outside of the sunrise/sunset ours, are the opposite. Very tight-fisted, they will go to the supermarket just before closing to find the items that have been reduced in price. They save money with great determination, only to squander it in an unguarded moment.
Of all the signs they are the most outspoken and blunt. . Roosters enjoy keeping records and are forever writing notes on bits of paper which are then filed and put away. They also tend to build castles in the air, which leads to another prominent feature of their personality; to promise more than they can deliver. A little short of initiative at times, once Roosters find a task that fits their rigid temperament nothing will stand in a Roosters way.
Although blunt, the roosters honesty makes for stable relationships. Their tendency to point out faults in other sometimes loses them friends, especially as they themselves do not take criticism easily.
The Rooster, or Chicken as he is also called, is the Don Quixote of the Chinese cycle. The dauntless hero who must look to the earth to survive, he is the most misunderstood and eccentric of all the signs. Outwardly, he is the epitome of self-assurance and aggression, but at heart he could be conservative and old-fashioned.The Rooster-born, especially the men, will be attractive, even dashingly handsome. The princely fowl is radiant and proud of his fine feathers and has an impeccable carriage. You don't find any roosters slouching; they strut about with dignity. Even the shyest member of the Rooster family will cut a neat, trim figure and maintain a special bearing wherever he goes. There are two distinct types of Roosters. The rapid-firing, extremely talkative ones and the deadly solemn observer types with the X-ray vision. Both are equally hard to deal with. The Rooster has many outstanding qualities to crow about. He is sharp, neat, precise, organized, decisive, upright, alert and most direct. He can also be critical to the point of brutality. Don't ever ask him for his frank, candid opinion--you may never recover from his comments. He loves to argue and debate, showing how knowledgeable and smart he is, sometimes with little regard for the feelings of others. But when his feathers are ruffled in return, he is insufferable. He isn't cut out to be a diplomat. Situations requiring tact, delicacy and discretion will cramp his style. His way is to go about trying to convert everyone to his way of thinking with missionary zeal.An outstanding performer, the Rooster shines when he is the center of attraction. Tremendously imposing as a personality, he could well pursue any career that exposes him to the public eye. Gay, witty and amusing, the magnificent Rooster will never pass up an opportunity to recount his adventures and enumerate his accomplishments. He is adroit at expressing himself both in speech and in writing. You will have to concede that he is well-versed and prepared for any subject to be discussed. If you intend to challenge him on a controversial issue, be ready to fight long and hard--the Rooster has amazing stamina does his homework and can wear you out. When the Rooster is negative, he is egoistic, opinionated and too abrasive for his own good. In his mind, he is 100 percent right. He presides over gatherings to exhibit the excellent opinion he has of himself. However, if you look closely, you will find that he puts on this act more as a way to constantly reassure himself of his own worth rather than to irritate anyone. For all his poise and bravado, the Rooster is not that sure of himself, and is therefore most susceptible to flattery or delusions of grandeur. All members of the Chicken family can handle money. They are just fascinated by accounting, sorting out finances and generally guarding the cash box. He budgets everything he can get his hands on and that includes his time, your time, the mailman's time, company time, ad infinitum. Even the smallest one will most likely be elected as Treasurer of the Little League. He will handle his pennies wisely, and before you know it he may be running his own mini-bank, giving loans and charging interest from more careless youngsters. If you have problems with your finances due to a lack of self-control--turn your money over to a Rooster. He'll make you an ironclad budget and slap your wrists every time you touch one cent more than allowed. While you may live to lament this move, you can be sure he is doing it all for your own good--even if he does seem to be sadistically enjoying it a bit too much and even if it is your money. Don't be so ungrateful! You should thank your lucky stars he condescended to help you at all.Now all those bits and pieces of paper you scattered around have been neatly filed away by this efficiency expert. Your income is reconciled with your expenditures for the first time in years. You start to see the light of day. And the Internal Revenue wolf has not cast his dark shadow on your doorstep now that the Rooster is here and your creditors no longer haunt you day and night. You would be worse off, you know, if it weren't for this financial savior.I know, too, at this point you may think you have got more than you bargained for. You will complain bitterly how he won't let you off lightly even for your smallest error. You are now in a state of perfect financial accord, yet totally miserable in this newfound bliss. Your blood pressure shoots up every time you have one of those profound discussions with him. Well, relax. Don't take it so hard.Try to think back. Remember that day you took him on and how he made that sacred vow to help you out of the woods and stick to you "for better or for worse"? It is just that you get to see the worse part first. Stick around, things are bound to get better. His key word is service and he won't disappoint even your greatest expectations. You may not be able to live with the Rooster, but you will find that neither can you get along without him.Actually, the Chinese character for the Rooster is "Ji," which simply means Chicken. But since this person will do anything but "chicken out" of a situation, I have respectfully chosen to address him as the Rooster. Besides, the Rooster's personality really enhances and dominates that of the entire chicken family. If there were to be an ad in tomorrow's paper for a "Superman with Fine Fiscal Abilities," you can be sure the Rooster would apply and be qualified for the job, too.His is the sign of the collector, too. Outstanding accounts bug him terribly. And you know what chickens do with bugs. My, my, you have all these uncollectible debts due you? Just watch the Rooster roll up his sleeves and take on those culprits who owe you money. You cannot find anyone finer to carry out an important directive. He loves difficult assignments. But don't expect him to improvise. He is an explicit person and you have to give him explicit orders. On top of all his virtues, you cannot ask him to be versatile and inventive too. That would be asking too much.To truly understand a Rooster, you must accept his predilection for controversy. This may be because of the mental exercise it provides him. You must comprehend, difficult as it may sound, that there is nothing personal in his moves. You should have enough sense to keep out of the crossfire when you know his gun is always loaded. And while he does seem knowledgeable and wordly about everything else it should also be noted that the Rooster can be puritanical about sex or affairs of the heart. For the Rooster to make smooth, unimpeded progress it would be well if he first realized that people will not be so adverse to accepting his excellent advice--if only he could do better with the packaging. A little sugar coating, perhaps? He doesn't have to be like the old-fashioned doctor who prescribes bitter-tasting concoctions with no I regard for our delicate taste buds! When a Rooster spends lavishly, he must be doing it to appease his oversize ego. He is a sharp dresser and loves to attract attention. Therefore, he occasionally will have the tendency to over-decorate his home, his office or even himself. He is also very impressed with awards of all kinds, medals and honorary titles. Every Rooster will try to win at least one award, have one professional title to his credit or get a minimum of one medal per war. With money, he will only be generous with his immediate family or in order to win love and admiration from his followers. Otherwise, the only thing you can be assured of getting from him free is - advice.A Rooster born at the crack of dawn, during the Tiger's hours, or at sundown (between 5 and 7 P.M., the hours of the Rooster) is definitely going to be the noisiest of the lot. I personally know of one whose family has long since been considering the use of a muzzle to silence his lengthy discourses. Too bad not one among them has worked up the courage for the task. Night Roosters tend to be the exact opposite. They can be over serious, self-contained and uncommunicative even. These quiet roosters tend to be doubly eccentric, bookwormish, aloof or insulated in their quest for perfection. All Roosters are perfectionists in one form or another. They will have a sharp eye for details mixed with theoretical flights of fancy. Their ideas sometimes look better on paper than in actual application because they forget to make allowance for human frailties and other varying factors. They have scientific minds and may fail to see why other people cannot exist by fixed formulas as they do.Yet for all his faults and interfering ways, the Rooster native is usually sincere in his desire to help others and will undoubtedly mean well in all his endeavors. He just comes on too strong because he is so positive in his convictions that he tends to close his mind to the views of others. If the Rooster's dreams are too farfetched and over-ambitious, he will suffer many disappointments in life. He must learn to stop reaching for the sky. While he can be practical about difficult matters, the Rooster can also be very unreasonable and difficult over simple things. But it is useless standing between him and his goals. He is the dauntless knight, who recovers at a moment's notice and will go off chasing another rainbow. Who knows, he may succeed at the next try. The Rooster is brave and chivalrous under stress, but sometimes he will carry his heroism far beyond what is required. The female of this sign is usually more down to earth and less colorful in her aspirations. She is super-efficient and will get things done with a minimum of fuss. You can rely on her to have enormous amounts of energy to dedicate to any job she sets her sights on.One would be hard pressed to find a more helpful woman than the female Chicken, with the exception of a Boar lady. Although this Hen acts like she has been gang-pressed into her labors, the truth is that she loves to conscript herself to a life of involvement and dedication. What would she do with her vast reserves of energy otherwise? Whereas others are only bored, she can actually be frightened when she finds extra time on her hands. The Hen is more adaptable than the male Rooster and will do well in society. She will have no qualms about being a mere worker, just one of the group, if it gets her where she is going. Routine appeals to her and she is always on schedule if not ahead of it. She is as capable and productive as her male counterpart but will go about performing less offensively. Careful, dutiful and less obtrusive, she could excel in precision work, proofreading, preparing long-range studies or compiling statistics and the like. A meticulous worker, she is also likely to make a very thorough and patient teacher, watchful and protective mother and solicitous wife. She does have the tendency to harp or constantly remind you of what is next on the agenda, but this should be accredited to over-zealousness and not to the fact that she is out to persecute you. One gets the impression that she is out to reform or remake the people she loves. This is simply her way of showing that she cares. She cannot bear to see you make mistakes when she is on hand to prevent such blunders. Consequently, she will help you up every time you stumble, supply you with the right word every time you stammer. Helpful to the extreme, the Hen can drive the objects of her devotion to the limits of sanity. She will forgive you anything, but not before she gets those hurt feelings off her chest with a strong lecture. After that, she won't harbor grudges and is not vindictive by nature. The lady Chicken is a simple dresser. She will go for simple, classical and natural outfits that could be appropriate for numerous occasions and which can be complemented by her large array of accessories.Taking a peek into her handbag could tell you loads more about her character. Besides all those little notes she writes to herself constantly, she will probably have a tape measure and all the dress and shoe sizes of her entire family. She's armed to the teeth with remedies for every illness and other do's and don't's. She is precise and orderly and will enjoy taking charge of distributing or organizing things. It is not beyond her to open the office in the morning and lock up after everyone leaves in the evening. She guards her responsibilities jealously and enjoys with gusto the power her authority confers.Every Rooster is a reputable worker. He will know how to please his superiors, who in turn will be impressed by his sharp intellect and efficiency. But although he has boundless energy and a driving will to succeed, the Rooster is too cocksure when he is negative and can misdirect his efforts or take on impossible tasks. The irony of it is that the Rooster will find success and money in the most common places. Contrary to his own opinions, he will not have to search far and wide for his fortune. As the Chinese put it, "Chickens can find food even in the hardest ground with their sturdy beaks and claws."Likewise, if the vigilant Rooster person can bring himself down to earth and apply himself to mundane matters, he can literally dig up gold from his own backyard. He would do well setting up his own business or running the family estate. But wherever he goes, he will be meticulous and competent enough to have everything operating smoothly in no time at all.The emotions of the Rooster-born swing high and low. He is plagued by an activity-oriented and inquisitive mind. His probing ways keep him chained -to his objectives. Once he sets out to prove a point, he will not leave a single stone unturned. He makes an excellent investigator: there is a bit of Sherlock Holmes in every Rooster. With his many administrative abilities and natural passion for work, the Rooster will start out young and be successful early in life. What he needs most in everything he undertakes is restraint, moderation and a firm hand to direct his irrepressible energies. No matter how competent he is, he must realize that he cannot take the world by storm in a single day and reprogram everyone else in it to do things his way. In short, the Rooster-born can achieve the most astonishing task with aplomb and then become eccentric over the last detail. The Rooster loves praise, is allergic to criticism of any kind and can be very selfish about sharing the limelight. He will never like to admit he is wrong. He will go to all lengths to discredit his enemies. A good provider, the Rooster person is wonderful to his family and will indulge them anything, provided no one dares usurp his No. 1 spot. It would do well for him to have a large family as he needs a cheering squad to bring out the best in him.No matter what happens, it will be an advantage that the Rooster is indeed a tireless worker, for he will have to work his way through life. Things won't just fall into his lap. He is the intrepid dreamer, full of ambition and goodwill but destined to succeed in ordinary things. Yet, on the other hand, it will not pay to underestimate his powers. Being fiercely competitive by instinct, he could peck the formidable Snake to death should he set his mind to it.To sum it up, the colorful but controversial Rooster will never fail to make an impression on you. You will either be enchanted and grow to love him immensely or you will simply be unable to bear the sight and sound of him.The Rooster will pair off nicely with the wise and intuitive Snake. The Snake in turn will need the effervescent personality and sunny, dauntless outlook of the Rooster to cheer up his life. The Ox will also welcome the sunshine the Rooster could bring into his regimental existence. both will be compulsive workers although the Chicken is not as Spartan as the Ox. The Dragon will definitely find the grandiose plans of the Rooster very much to his liking, both of them being outgoing, energetic and ambitious. The Tiger, Sheep, Monkey and Boar will be the next best partners for the Rooster. Put two Roosters together and you know what you will get--a cockfight. With the Hens, there is more likely to be more harmony. The Rooster-born will come into conflict with people born under the sign of the Rat. The Rooster lacks intimacy, the Rat thrives by it. Neither will the Rooster find happiness with the Rabbit-born. The Rabbit is sensitive and will seek to avoid squabbling or inciting his enemies. The Rooster on the other hand is an expert at provoking a fight and can rub people the wrong way by his uncomplimentary remarks. This trait will scandalize and alienate the Rabbit, who cannot bear such glaring directness. The Dog's relation with the Rooster will range from lukewarm to frosty, depending on how wide the gaps are between their different points of view. They could work together when necessary but they are not fated to be joined together in perfect connubial bliss.

RAT
A bit of a charmer, the rat is usually welcome anywhere; however, generally has few close friends. The rat is intelligent, quick-witted and hardworking. Somewhat ambitious, with a tendency to be frivolous with material possessions.
The rat is strongly family oriented, enjoys thrills but is easily bored. A little insecure and can lack boldness. The rat is an opportunist who lives for the moment and rarely plans for the future. All rats have a propensity for aggression; however, this is seldom expressed physically, but rather in fretting over details and being overly concerned about trivialities
The always thrifty Rat, counts their pennies and knows how to spot a bargain. Impatient with those of slower wit or actions, this soul needs a bright partner willing to lend an ear with a good sense of humor. The talkative Rat is also a natural writer and critic with an eye for details.
The Rat in 2009 Year of the OxThose born in 1912 (Water) 1924 (Wood), 1936 (Fire), 1948 (Earth), 1960 (Metal), 1972 (Water), 1984 (Wood), 1996 (Fire) and 2008 (Earth). The Rat fares well in Ox year and although you may find you are faced with more responsibility than normal you will make steady progress through your intelligence and resourcefulness. You will enjoy the challenge of finding solutions to problems and in career you should prosper. 2009 is a good year for love and romance for the Rat who is looking for that special someone and the Earth element of 2009 will be a good year to settle down and create a stable and loving home. Rat parents will have cause to be proud of at least one of their children and family life will be very happy. Your lucky gemstone is the Garnet which brings you love and loyalty from others. Your most compatible signs are Monkey, Dragon, Ox and Rabbit and your lucky months are January and February.
The Ox or the Buffalo sign symbolizes prosperity through fortitude and hard work. A person born during this year will be dependable, calm and methodical. A patient and tireless worker, he sticks to routine and conventions. Although he is generally fair-minded and a good listener, it is difficult to make him change his views as he is stubborn and often has strong prejudices.Still, because of his steady and trustworthy character, the Ox person will be entrusted with positions of authority and responsibility. He will not fall short where duty calls. As a matter of fact, he should be careful not to get carried away. Beneath his somewhat modest but neat appearance, the Ox shields a resolute and logical mind. His intelligence and dexterity is hidden by the reticent and undemonstrative front. But in spite of being basically an introvert, his forceful nature can turn him into a commanding and eloquent speaker when the occasion arises. In times of turmoil, his presence of mind, refusal to be intimidated and innate self-confidence will restore order. He walks with his head held high.A person born under this particular sign is systematic. He adheres to fixed patterns and has great respect for tradition. In fact, he tends to do exactly what is expected of him and is so predictable, that he may be unfairly criticized for a lack of imagination. But the dutiful Ox knows that only through doing things in their proper order can he hope to achieve lasting success. His is the uncluttered mind. You won't find him muddling through life depending on his luck to pull him through. What people born under the other signs may accomplish by guile and wit, the Ox-born will by sheer tenacity and dedication. You can rely on his promises; once he gives his word, he will stick by it. Public opinion means little to him. He will apply himself wholeheartedly to whatever task he is doing and finish the job. He detests loose ends. The Ox can be terribly naive about affairs of the heart. He cannot fully comprehend the entrapments of love, much less employ enticing strategy and other allures to plead his romantic cause. Don't expect lyric poetry and moonlight serenades from him. He just doesn't have the right chemistry for these sort of things. Even his presents are likely to be strong and durable wares: unpretentious and long lasting.Because they are traditionalists, the Ox man and woman will also be inclined to long courtships. It takes time for them to develop intimate relationships. They are slow to warm up and reveal their true feelings. The Ox man may be a knight of the most distinguished order, a gentleman of the highest caliber, but he can turn into a fumbling, tongued-tied lad when it comes to wooing his fair maiden. But if you marry him and place your trust squarely on his shoulders, he will never disappoint you; he will stick by you faithfully all his life. You never need worry about the rent or the bills getting paid. He may not keep you in diamonds and furs but life will be as comfortable as he can make it and you will never be in need.If you have the good fortune to marry an Ox lady, you sure picked the no-nonsense type of girl. She'll starch your collar just the way your mother does it, fold your newspaper neatly on the breakfast table every day without fail and poach your eggs to perfection. Even that "good morning" kiss may seem like nothing more than a dutiful peck now and then. But if you think of her as being boring or too set in her ways, consider this. She is neat and punctual. You will never go through married life without clean shirts or holes in your socks or having to eat burnt dinners. Honest, hardworking and above reproach, she will make an ideal wife. The checkbook will be balanced and your joint account never overdrawn. It's up to you to liven up her life and take the lead. After all, the Ox person usually performs more than his or her share. A lot of wonderful things come wrapped in plain brown paper. The Ox is one of them. Don't ever belittle the packaging. He is worth his weight in gold.Aside from his many sterling qualities, the Ox person is also known to nurture grievances far too long. He has a long and exacting memory, and injuries can be registered down to their last detail.Where other signs such as the Tiger, Rooster or Rat may complain vehemently when they are upset and the Sheep and Rabbit will sulk and become morose, the Ox will react by plunging himself into hard work to alleviate his misery and tension. If severely disappointed in love, he may bury himself in his work forever and lead a solitary existence instead of running the risk of ever being humiliated or rejected again. The Ox will insist on settling his accounts. Debts will be paid to the last decimal point. If he owes you something he will never forgive himself if he doesn't show his gratitude in a tangible way. No profuse but empty phrases of appreciation from him. He considers flowery words and lavish flattery uncouth and beneath his dignity. But won't it come as a surprise to you when you find out that that gruff fellow, who barely managed to mumble a "Thank you," left you something in his will? Well, that's a typical Ox gesture for you. If anyone's actions speak louder than his words--his do.Beware of the Ox's legendary patience, because when an Ox person loses his temper, he is really something to reckon with. It could be a terrifying experience. There will be no reasoning with him: he will act like a bull and attack anyone in his path. The only advisable thing to do is to get out of his way until he cools off. By and large, however, he is seldom given to such taxing display of fireworks unless he finds his situation truly unbearable. At home, his word is law. He knows how to give orders as well as follow them. And he expects his directives to be carried out to the letter. He has a materialistic outlook on life, and although he may be inordinately fond and proud of his family, he demands a lot from them, too. He will use the yardstick of success and personal achievement to measure his love for them. Even though he is not easily moved by emotions, he is a good provider and is capable of great sacrifices for his family's welfare. When and where it really counts, he will not let them down.An Ox person will always be an asset to his firm and family. He has no reason to feel insecure himself as he will be well cared for all his life. Reason dictates that one so valuable should not be left to fend for himself. The Ox born during the day will be more aggressive and active compared to the quiet night ox. Similarly, the winter Ox will have more trying times and a leaner life than the summer Ox.The native of this lunar sign is a down-to-earth type and will follow his head rather than his heart. So if you want to win your case, appeal to his reason and intelligence. Make a list of the pros and cons and support every request with pertinent and reliable data. Sentiments alone rarely make him change his mind. He also has a remarkable constitution and does not get sick easily. Proud and uncompromising, the Ox is disdainful of weakness in others. If he can learn to cultivate more humor and compassion, he will be much happier.A natural-born leader and disciplinarian, he tends to be too rigid. Likely to be a self-made man, he staunchly believes everyone should pull his own weight--and no hedging about it either. At his worst, the Ox is unapproachable, inflexible and narrow-minded. His lack of tact and consideration for others coupled with a militant view of life at times could make him unsuitable for positions involving public relations, diplomacy and finesse. However, he is respected and liked for his basic honesty, unpretentiousness and steadfast principles. He inspires loyalty in all his subordinates, as no task is beneath him.As mentioned earlier, the Ox person is not one who will go for the shortcuts. His quiet dignity and strong morals will prevent him from resorting to unfair means to achieve his goals. He will dislike asking others for help. As a matter of fact, he is so self-reliant, that you may have to beg him to accept a service. The Ox-born has dynastic tendencies. Careful and conscientious, he builds things to last. This sturdiness in his genes will extend to his offspring and generations to come even if they are not born under the same sign. His excellent character makes him an empire builder. He will take all precautions to ensure the prosperity and survival of his lineage. As the paterfamilias, he will lay down the laws pontifically and stand for no youthful rebellion. He builds his life around his home, his work and his country and will always prefer long-term, stable investments. Being a strict creature of habit, he is no gambler: risks and razor-thin margins unnerve him because they endanger his deep-felt need for security.Of all the twelve signs, the colorful Rooster will bring the sunshine into the Ox's orderly life and make a splendid partner for him. Both have high respect for authority, admire efficiency and possess strong dedication to duty. These common attributes will unite them. Equally well suited will be the affectionate Rat or the wise Snake, both of whom will care deeply for the worthy Ox. Dragon, Rabbit, Ox, Horse, Boar and Monkey will also be compatible to a lesser degree with the Ox. But the Dog may find him too bland and criticize his lack of humor; the Ox himself will not care too much for the company of the capricious Sheep or the rebellious Tiger native, who in turn will resent his regimentation.Whatever happens, one can be sure that the success enjoyed by the Ox will have been earned by his own merits. In short, the strong and disciplined Ox does not expect and will not be getting any free rides in life. This stalwart fellow will emerge a winner through his own efforts and no one should be more deserving.
The Ox in 2009 Year of the OxThose born in 1913 (Water), 1925 (Wood), 1937 (Fire), 1949 (Earth), 1961 (Metal), 1973 (Water), 1985 (Wood), 1997 (Fire) and 2009 (Earth).2009 will be a difficult year in areas of communication and responsibility for the Ox. It will be important to think before you speak and stay calm in the face of opposition. Hang on to gains made last year and do not doubt that your hard work will go unrewarded. You will be appreciated by those who matter. Family life and the home will bring you the comfort you so enjoy. Ox can benefit from gardening and connecting with the Earth, to listen and engage with its wisdom. Any form of physical exercise will harmonise the body and help bring a new understanding and spiritual awareness. Love and relating is favourable for Ox and family celebrations are likely. Lucky stone for Ox is Aquamarine which brings peace, tranquility and good health to the wearer. Your most compatible signs are Snake, Rooster, Rat, Rabbit and Dog and your lucky months are March, September and December.
The tiger is adventurous, confident and enthusiastic. Because of this they are often successful in their chosen careers. Tigers are excellent at seeing problems, but not so good at finding solutions. They tend to rush in without sufficient consideration. Their strong sense of independence means that they hate to take orders.
Tigers often go to extraordinary lengths to prove themselves, and hate to be ignored. They are often noticed, and as such tend to rise to prominent positions. However, tigers rarely make it to the very top, preferring to be second in command.
Romantically, tigers are somewhat reckless, and can risk everything in pursuit of their heart's desires. As a friend they are extremely generous, and tend to give everything all at once. However, lasting friendships are few and far between. Excellent as parents, tigers teach their children by example
The Tiger in 2009 Year of the OxThose born 1914 (Wood), 1926 (Fire), 1938 (Earth), 1950 (Metal), 1962 (Water), 1974 (Wood), 1986, (Fire) 1998 (Earth) and 2010 (Metal).2009 can bring you advancement in your career but not necessarily great increase in money, however if you are careful not to engage in verbal battles and maintain the peace in the workplace you will find that next year, in your own year of Tiger, you will reap the rewards of past endeavours. This is not a year to spend, but rather to save. By nature you are generous and you will need to curb your generosity this year as you can be taken advantage of by those who wish to exploit you. Your health should cause you no worries providing you watch your diet and your intake of rich food and alcohol. Be sure to get enough rest and relaxation to avoid mental and physical strain and you will breeze through the year with ease and be ready to enjoy the more rewarding year of Tiger in 2010. Lucky stone for Tiger is Sapphire and assists with enlightenment, prosperity and inner strength. Wear it to guard against negativity. Pig, Sheep, Rat, Ox and Tiger are your most compatible signs and your lucky months are July and November.
The rabbit is very sensitive, lucky, smart and creative. Their creativity extends to a love of all things beautiful, and accordingly they place great value on establising a beautiful home. This combines with a good nose for a bargain, to make rabbits 'collectors' of beautiful things. The love of beauty is also expressed in their dress sense, and female rabbits are said to have wonderful hair.
The rabbit is reserved and discreet, not particularly caring for the troubles of the world. Rabbits have an aversion to suffering which often means that they will shut out the cruelties of the real world, and retreat to their home and families. The rabbit is a good listener, and this, combined with its discretion makes it an excellent shoulder to cry on, as well as a very good diplomat.
Strategists by nature, rabbits will set a plan and follow it through. They are not given to acting on impulse. The rabbit prefers a routined lifestyle that only changes slowly over time. In business, they keep their word and avoid making promises they can't keep.
The Rabbit in 2009 Year of the OxThose born 1915 (Wood),1927 (Fire), 1939 (Earth), 1951 (Metal), 1963 (Water), 1975 (Wood), 1987 (Fire), 1999 (Earth) and 2011 (Metal).Ox year is generally favourable for the Rabbit and although great advancements will have to wait, steady progress can be made if you hold your emotions in check. You may be called upon to be the peace maker in family or work situations this year and you can pour oil on troubled waters better than most. Holidays taken near the water will be most beneficial for Rabbits and be sure you make time in your busy schedule for some time away with loved ones. Your social life may be a little quiet, but in spite of that you will basically enjoy the year. The lucky gem for Rabbit is the Pearl and represents purity and innocence. Wear pearls to help find your true soul mate. Pig, Sheep, Rat, ox and Tiger are your most compatible signs and your lucky months are July and November.
Dragons have strong personalities. They are self -assured and confident in their own abilities. They do not suffer fools easily, and become impatient with people who they perceive throw in the towel too readily: for their own part, they can put up quite a fight.
Dragons are honest, and often speak their minds, even when this is not appropriate. They are popular if somewhat inconsistent, full of energy, charismatic and colourful, strong, enthusiastic and inspiring.
The dragon is averse to any form of routine, preferring the freedom to pursue his or her own agenda. Should a dragon feel imprisoned either mentally or physically they will become very erratic. Once in decline, a dragon tends to become lazy, fat and bitter.
The outspoken nature of the dragon, and their tunnel vision may make him or her appear brash. However, by nature the dragon is a romantic.
The Dragon in 2009 Year of the OxThose born 1916 (Fire), 1928 (Earth), 1940 (Metal), 1952 (Water), 1964 (Wood), 1976 (Fire), 1988 (Earth), 2000 (Metal) and 2012 (Water).Like the Ox, Dragon is related to the Earth element and this year should be generally successful. There are changes in the wind that may see you take an unexpected direction in life. Patience is the key word for you as you may not find your expectations met so readily. This could be a good year to change residence or make changes within the home, but on the career front it is advisable to be cautious with change until perhaps Tiger year in 2010. Romance can be challenging this year but overall you should find happiness and contentment with loved ones. Your lucky gemstone is Amethyst and helps with intuition, wealth, spirituality and assists your psychic powers. Your most compatible signs are Rat, Monkey, Tiger, Snake and Pig, and your best months are June and December.
The snake is a great thinker and philosopher, but conversely often makes decisions purely based upon intuition. Snakes are charming people with a strong sense of responsibility and a good sense of humour. On the downside the snake is a bit of a miser, and doesn't like to spend money.
The snake is endowed with immense intuition, and is somewhat enigmatic. Graceful and soft-spoken, the snake is a lover of the arts, fine books, food, music, the theatre. The snake has a natural penchant for the finer things in life. Snakes are famous for their beautiful skin and good looks.
The snake has the annoying habit of shunning advice and relying on their own counsel - annoying because, more often than not, they are correct!
Snakes make good teachers and although somewhat ill-disciplined themselves, require obedience and discipline both in the home as well as in the workplace.
The Snake in 2009 Year of the OxThose born 1917 (Fire), 1929 (Earth), 1941 (Metal), 1953 (Water), 1965 (Wood), 1977 (Fire), 1989 (Earth), 2001 (Metal) and 2013 Water).Mixed fortunes are yours this Ox year and you may be faced with confrontations on the home and work front. You do not like to depend on others but may be best served by calling on the help of colleagues when needed. You will have to budget well and not make extravagant purchases – a case of make do with what you have. By nature you are wise, and with patience and perseverance you should be able to turn disadvantages around providing you are prepared to work that bit harder than usual. Romance may not be high on your agenda this year, but if you are in a committed relationship you will draw strength from it. Gemstone for the Snake is the Opal which has strong mystical powers and will bring abundance and good luck to Snakes who wear it. It is also believed wearing Opal can help you receive advice from the spirits through your dreams. Your most compatible signs are Ox, Rooster, Rat, Dragon and Monkey and April and September are your lucky months.
Horses are hardworking people who are generally well liked and admired. As well as working hard, they play hard.
Horses are independent, and are well known for their individuality. They intuitively gravitate towards tasks to which they are well suited. This, together with their hard working nature invariably leads to success.
The horse is a strong masculine sign, and both male and female horses are fairly laid back and easy going, while at the same time being direct. Asked for an opinion, the horse will give it, and where factual matters are concerned, the horse is a good source of reliable information.
The horse is a placid person; however, if their passions are brought to the boil, the result is not easily forgotten - wild horses are hard to calm down. In the home the horse is a steady partner, although they are likely to give as much attention to their work as to their families. Horses easily fall in love, but there are many passing relationships before a long-term partner is found.
The Horse in 2009 Year of the OxThose born 1918 (Earth), 1930 (Metal), 1942 (Water), 1954 (Wood), 1966 (Fire), 1978 (Earth), 1990 (Metal), 2002 (Water) and 2014 (Wood).Horse people are hard-working and love a challenge, so this Ox year of hard work and challenge will be much easier for you equines than most others of the zodiac. This is a more rewarding year for you than last year and if you are in line for promotion you won’t be overlooked. Career and financial dealings are favourable, however if wanting to invest dodge the “get rich quick” schemes and stick to the tried and tested, rock solid deals. Determination should help you accomplish all you set out to achieve this year. Relationships fare reasonably well. Watch your reputation, and realise that others won’t be able to keep up your pace so make allowances for them. Your gemstone is the Topaz which gives you courage and confidence and assists in creativity and overcoming obstacles. Your most compatible signs are Tiger, Dog, Sheep and Pig and your lucky months are February, July and October.
Also known as the Goat and the Ram, The Sheep is a gentle person, caring and compassionate. They are quiet when hurt, are strongly family oriented and being born under the sign of art, love beautiful things.
The sheep is the most feminine of the twelve animal signs. Sheep are thought by the Chinese to be harbingers of peace. Sheep are pacifist by nature, only becoming militant in order to restore harmony, and are quick to react against conflict to bring peace. Sheep love the good life, and their dislike for aggression and love for peace stems more from their love of fine things and the realisation that to enjoy these things, peace is required.
As aesthetic people, rams love to make a show of things. They make ideal performers, and are seldom bashful in front of a crowd - indeed, rams thrive when all eyes are turned on them. They have a strong tendency to roam, and for this reason need guidance, or in extreme cases, tethering!
The Sheep in 2009 Year of the OxThose born 1919 (Earth), 1931 (Metal), 1943 (Water), 1955 (Wood), 1967 (Fire), 1979 (Earth), 1991 (Metal), 2003 (Water) and 2015 Wood).Ox year is your most challenging year of all the signs as Ox is your opposite sign and you will be uncomfortable with all that is expected of you. Meditation, spiritual and creative pursuits will help you through the year. Try not to take on more than you can handle as you could suffer from anxiety and stress. It is time to curb your spending and “neither a borrower nor a lender be” as financial matters will not be successful for you. All matters financial, relating and career will take a turn for the better in Tiger year, 2010. This year keep a low profile and associate with those you know you can trust. Lucky gemstone for the Goat is the Emerald which symbolises the mother of all Goddesses. It will bring wealth, love, self knowledge and mental clarity to Goats. Your most compatible signs are Rabbit, Pig, Horse, Monkey and Dog and your most fortunate months are January, March and May.
Charming, cheeky, mischievous and ingenious, monkeys have little respect for authority, and often find themselves in trouble. Monkeys are born under the sign of fantasy and of all the twelve signs, monkeys are the nearest to mankind. Monkeys are blessed with great intelligence, and having a high regard for knowledge, they are capable of thinking through even the most complex problems.
Monkeys are not the best business people in the world. They are opportunistic, and often end up chasing profits rather than following through any business strategy. However, their quick wits and intelligence often brings them through, and they may make a fortune from nothing. A powerful memory coupled with a cool temperament when under pressure all give the monkey extremely strong survival skills.
The Chinese warn that the charm of the monkey, together with its tendency to fantasise can result in them telling extraordinary tales which you end up believing, however improbable. This helps them get out of difficult situations, and often helps them escape punishment for their mischief.
The monkey is a bit of a thrill seeker, and is always looking for a new experience. As such they find long term relationships somewhat elusive.
The Monkey in 2009 Year of the OxThose born 1920 (Metal), 1932 (Water), 1944 (Wood), 1956 (Fire), 1968 (Earth), 1980 (Metal), 1992 (Water) 2004 (Wood) and 2016 (Fire). This Ox year is not a year for the wily, clever monkey to make great gains in business, and money in particular, or lack of it, may cause concerns as you could be faced with some unexpected expenses during the year. However the romantic side of life will improve and your social calendar will be full. Those of you who marry this year will have a long and happy union. Traveling is always beneficial for Monkey people and this year is no exception. Your lucky gemstone is Peridot which is considered to be powerful for monkey people and brings harmony in your relationships, mental clarity and spirituality. Also Jade and hematite are lucky and good protective gemstones to wear, especially when traveling. Your most compatible signs are Rat, Dragon, Snake and Rooster and your luckiest months are January, March and May.
Dogs are born under the sign of idealism, and as a result they are loyal and caring, hating injustice. They can be somewhat headstrong, and patience is not one of their strong points. Brave by nature, they do not shy away from danger.
The dog is a complex person, and not easily categorised, and come in all shapes and sizes. They are strongly influenced by a sense of fairness and of equality, and are often found to be promoting social reform.
Stubborn, watchful and often defensive, dogs find it hard to understand the general indifference people have to the wrongs of the world. They are quick to point out this fault, and to criticise our lack of concern for the world's injustices.
The dog's main ambition is to please. The desire to please often leads the dog to periods of anxiety, worrying that they are not doing their best. What other people think is important to a dog, and this can also lead to anxiety, and they can become very pessimistic when things aren't going well.
Dogs are often materially successful, and can make large sums of money; however, their cares for the world often means that their wealth does not bring happiness, which is brought about by personal relationships.
The Dog in 2009 Year of the OxThose born 1922 (Water), 1934 (Wood), 1946 (Fire), 1958 (Earth), 1970 (Metal), 1982 (Water), 1994 (Wood), 2006 (Fire) and 2018 (Earth).Ox year is a compatible year for Dogs and you can expect many changes that will blossom in the year of the Tiger, 2010 so do not be discouraged if you feel you should be seeing rewards earlier. You need to be patient and believe that all your efforts will bear fruit eventually. You may change job, get married have children, move home, renovate your home, change your appearance. Whatever the changes, whether you seek them out or they are forced upon you, embrace them and know that they are for the betterment of your life and will bring good fortune with them. If purchasing property be sure to have good legal representation and read all contracts thoroughly. Also if starting a business or buying into a business, legal matters need to be thoroughly checked. Anything you undertake this year will be laying good foundations for the future. Health should not be too problematic but do watch stress levels and try to be calm and patient when confronted with delays. The lucky gemstone for Dogs is the Diamond and believed to endow the wearer with power, protection, courage and strength. Your most compatible signs are Tiger, Horse, Sheep and Pig. Your luckiest months are January, February and June.
Also known as the Boar, the pig is a peace-lover, strong and straightforward. They can be seen as pure people who enjoy a quiet life. Although they can be quick to lose their tempers, they are just as quick to make up, forgive and forget. They are born under the sign of honesty.
Although they have a bad reputation in the West, the pig is highly regarded by the Chinese. No other animal works harder or plays harder. Well informed and social, the robust and hearty pig loves company. Another great love is clothing. Pigs dress to impress, and are masters of power dressing in work situations. On the social scene, the pig is the trend setter, not being simply well dressed, but being impressively dressed.
Despite their strong dress sense, pride in appearances does not always extend to the home! If pigs are messy in the home, then they are really messy. It is a strange trait of the pig that these two characteristics can run side by side. However, some pigs are just as flashy in their domestic set-ups as they are in their dress sense.
Pigs are greater talkers, and love gossip. At the same time they ensure that their voices are heard in debates, though only after gauging their own position first: they will not generally offer their opinion first. Having voiced their opinion the pig will take the attitude, 'take it or leave' it, and again, is not really concerned with what others think. In romance, this trait is reflected with a tendency to fall in love very quickly, often before more self-conscious people would dare to reveal their feelings.
The Pig in 2009 Year of the OxThose born 1911 (Metal) 1923 (Water), 1935 (Wood), 1947 (Fire), 1959 (Earth), 1971 (Metal), 1983 (Water), 1995 (Wood), and 2007 (Fire).Your tolerance and steadfastness will serve you well this year, as Pigs by nature thrive in the year of Ox. You will be lucky in career and business and your plans will work out well. You could have some luck in speculation such as the lottery. Your excellent intuition could also give you the ability to make wise investments. Don’t neglect your social life or family by being a workaholic this year and do remember moderation in all things. All work and no play can make Pig a dull partner. You will achieve what you desire this year and will have the opportunity to benefit those around you. Your many friends as well as your family will be supportive of you so be sure to show your appreciation is words and deeds. The lucky gemstone for Pigs is the Ruby and helps Pig people with fame, fortune, health, intelligence and leadership. Pig gets along well with most everyone, but your most compatible signs are Rabbit, Goat/Sheep, Tiger, Dragon, Horse and Dog. Your luckiest months this year will be February, March, June and July.

Introduction - Hinduism
Introduction
Hinduism is not a religion but a way of life. Unlike other religions, Hindu dharma has many specialties. This is not known as a religion, it is known as the dharma; Sanaathana Dharma. Sanaathana means, according to Bhagavath Geetha, which cannot be destroyed by fire, weapons, water, air, and which is present in all living and non living being. Dharma means, the way of life which is the ‘total of all aachaaraas or customs and rituals’. Sanaathana Dharma has its foundation on scientific spirituality. In the entire ancient Hindu literature we can see that science and spirituality are integrated. It is mentioned in the 40th chapter of the Yajurveda known as Eesaavaasya Upanishad that use scientific knowledge for solving problems in our life and use the spiritual knowledge for attaining immortality through philosophical outlook. Remember that in each and every aachaaraa there will be a component of spirituality in it. Without spirituality, nothing exists in Sanaathana dharma. Generally everyone bear a wrong impression that this spirituality is religion. Spirituality is different in Hindu dharma. Here the question of religion does not exist at all, because Hindu dharma was not created by an individual, prophet or an incarnation. Spirituality is a part of every Hindu custom in the normal life of a Hindu. Aachaaraas are to be followed based on their merits available from the self experience; you need not blindly follow a teacher or someone who gives advice without reasoning. All these aachaaraas are mentioned for the prosperity of the human beings and it should be the prime focus for practicing the Hindu aachaaraas. Achaaryaath paadam aadatthe paadam sishya swamedhayaa paadam sa brahmachaaribhya sesham kaala kramena cha This is an important advice given in smruthies. It means a person can get only one quarter of knowledge from Achaarya - the teacher, another quarter by analyzing self, one quarter by discussing with others and the last quarter during the process of living by method addition, deletion, correction, and modification of already known aachaaraas or new aachaaraas. Aachaaraath labhathe hi ayu: aachaaraath dhanamakshayam aachaaraath labhathe suprajaa: aachaaro ahanthya lakshanam Aachaaraas are followed for the psychological and physiological health and long life; Aachaaraas are followed for prosperity and wealth; Aachaaraas are followed for strong family and social bondage and following the Aachaaraas give a fine personality, dharmic outlook and vision, says our dharmasaastra. In India everyone followed Aachaaraas for the above mentioned psychological, physiological, family relation, social benefits and national integration based benefits. It is your right and duty to understand scientifically, rationally and logically the meaning of each and every Aachaaraas and follow the same in your life systematically.

Why do we light a lamp?
1. Why do we light a lamp?
In almost every Indian home a lamp is lit daily before the altar of the Lord. In some houses it is lit at dawn, in some, twice a day – at dawn and dusk – and in a few it is maintained continuously - Akhanda Deepa. All auspicious functions commence with the lighting of the lamp, which is often maintained right through the occasion. Light symbolizes knowledge, and darkness - ignorance. The Lord is the "Knowledge Principle" (Chaitanya) who is the source, the enlivener and the illuminator of all knowledge. Hence light is worshiped as the Lord himself. Knowledge removes ignorance just as light removes darkness. Also knowledge is a lasting inner wealth by which all outer achievement can be accomplished. Hence we light the lamp to bow down to knowledge as the greatest of all forms of wealth. Why not light a bulb or tube light? That too would remove darkness. But the traditional oil lamp has a further spiritual significance. The oil or ghee in the lamp symbolizes our vaasanas or negative tendencies and the wick, the ego. When lit by spiritual knowledge, the vaasanas get slowly exhausted and the ego too finally perishes. The flame of a lamp always burns upwards. Similarly we should acquire such knowledge as to take us towards higher ideals. Whilst lighting the lamp we thus pray: Deepajyothi parabrahma Deepa sarva tamopahaha Deepena saadhyate saram Sandhyaa deepo namostute I prostrate to the dawn/dusk lamp; whose light is the Knowledge Principle (the Supreme Lord), which removes the darkness of ignorance and by which all can be achieved in life.

Why do we have a prayer room?
2. Why do we have a prayer room?
Most Indian homes have a prayer room or altar. A lamp is lit and the Lord worshipped each day. Other spiritual practices like japa - repetition of the Lord’s name, meditation, paaraayana - reading of the scriptures, prayers, and devotional singing etc are also done here. Special worship is done on auspicious occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, festivals and the like. Each member of the family - young or old - communes with and worships the Divine here.
The Lord is the entire creation. He is therefore the true owner of the house we live in too. The prayer room is the Master room of the house. We are the earthly occupants of His property. This notion rids us of false pride and possessiveness.
The ideal attitude to take is to regard the Lord as the true owner of our homes and us as caretakers of His home. But if that is rather difficult, we could at least think of Him as a very welcome guest. Just as we would house an important guest in the best comfort, so too we felicitate the Lord’s presence in our homes by having a prayer room or altar, which is, at all times, kept clean and well-decorated.
Also the Lord is all pervading। To remind us that He resides in our homes with us, we have prayer rooms. Without the grace of the Lord, no task can be successfully or easily accomplished. We invoke His grace by communing with Him in the prayer room each day and on special occasions.
Each room in a house is dedicated to a specific function like the bedroom for resting, the drawing room to receive guests, the kitchen for cooking etc. The furniture, decor and the atmosphere of each room are made conducive to the purpose it serves. So too for the purpose of meditation, worship and prayer, we should have a conducive atmosphere - hence the need for a prayer room.
Sacred thoughts and sound vibrations pervade the place and influence the minds of those who spend time there. Spiritual thoughts and vibrations accumulated through regular meditation, worship and chanting done there pervade the prayer room. Even when we are tired or agitated, by just sitting in the prayer room for a while, we feel calm, rejuvenated and spiritually uplifted.

Why do we do Namaste?
3. Why do we do Namaste?
Indians greet each other with namaste. The two palms are placed together in front of the chest and the head bows whilst saying the word namaste. This greeting is for all - people younger than us, of our own age, those older than friends, even strangers and us. There are five forms of formal traditional greeting enjoined in the shaastras of which namaskaram is one. This is understood as prostration but it actually refers to paying homage as we do today when we greet each other with a namaste. Namaste could be just a casual or formal greeting, a cultural convention or an act of worship. However there is much more to it than meets the eye. In Sanskrit namah + te = namaste. It means - I bow to you - my greetings, salutations or prostration to you. Namaha can also be literally interpreted as "na ma" (not mine). It has a spiritual significance of negating or reducing one’s ego in the presence of another. The real meeting between people is the meeting of their minds. When we greet another, we do so with namaste, which means, "may our minds meet," indicated by the folded palms placed before the chest. The bowing down of the head is a gracious form of extending friendship in love and humility The spiritual meaning is even deeper. The life force, the divinity, the Self or the Lord in me is the same in all. Recognizing this oneness with the meeting of the palms, we salute with head bowed the Divinity in the person we meet. That is why sometimes, we close our eyes as we do namaste to a revered person or the Lord – as if to look within. The gesture is often accompanied by words like "Ram Ram,” "Jai Shri Krishna", "Namo Narayana", "Jai Siya Ram", "Om Shanti" etc - indicating the recognition of this divinity. When we know this significance, our greeting does not remain just a superficial gesture or word but paves the way for a deeper communion with another in an atmosphere of love and respect.

Why do we prostrate before parents and elders?
Why do we prostrate before parents and elders?
Indians prostrate before their parents, elders, teachers and noble souls by touching their feet. The elder in turn blesses us by placing his or her hand on or over our heads. Prostration is done daily, when we meet elders and particularly on important occasions like the beginning of a new task, birthdays, festivals etc. In certain traditional circles, prostration is accompanied by abhivaadana, which serves to introduce one-self, announce one’s family and social stature.
Man stands on his feet. Touching the feet in prostration is a sign of respect for the age, maturity, nobility and divinity that our elders personify. It symbolizes our recognition of their selfless love for us and the sacrifices they have done for our welfare. It is a way of humbly acknowledging the greatness of another. This tradition reflects the strong family ties, which has been one of India’s enduring strengths.
The good wishes (Sankalpa) and blessings (aashirvaada) of elders are highly valued in India. We prostrate to seek them. Good thoughts create positive vibrations. Good wishes springing from a heart full of love, divinity and nobility have a tremendous strength. When we prostrate with humility and respect, we invoke the good wishes and blessings of elders, which flow in the form of positive energy to envelop us. This is why the posture assumed whether it is in the standing or prone position, enables the entire body to receive the energy thus received.
The different forms of showing respect are :
Pratuthana:
Rising to welcome a person.
Namaskaara:
Paying homage in the form of namaste
Upasangrahan:
Touching the feet of elders or teachers.
Shaashtaanga:
Prostrating fully with the feet, knees, stomach, chest, forehead and arms touching the ground in front of the elder.
Pratyabivaadana:
Returning a greeting.
Rules are prescribed in our scriptures as to who should prostrate to whom. Wealth, family name, age, moral strength and spiritual knowledge in ascending order of importance qualified men to receive respect. This is why a king though the ruler of the land, would prostrate before a spiritual master. Epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata have many stories highlighting this aspect.

Why do we wear marks (tilak, pottu and the like) on the forehead?
5. Why do we wear marks (tilak, pottu and the like) on the forehead?
The tilak or pottu invokes a feeling of sanctity in the wearer and others. It is recognized as a religious mark. Its form and colour vary according to one’s caste, religious sect or the form of the Lord worshipped.
In earlier times, the four castes (based on varna or colour) - Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Sudra - applied marks differently. The brahmin applied a white chandan mark signifying purity, as his profession was of a priestly or academic nature. The kshatriya applied a red kumkum mark signifying valour as he belonged to warrior races. The vaishya wore a yellow kesar or turmeric mark signifying prosperity as he was a businessman or trader devoted to creation of wealth. The sudra applied a black bhasma, kasturi or charcoal mark signifying service as he supported the work of the other three divisions.
Also Vishnu worshippers apply a chandan tilak of the shape of "U," Shiva worshippers a tripundra of bhasma, Devi worshippers a red dot of kumkum and so on).
The tilak cover the spot between the eyebrows, which is the seat of memory and thinking. It is known as the Aajna Chakra in the language of Yoga. The tilak is applied with the prayer - "May I remember the Lord. May this pious feeling pervade all my activities. May I be righteous in my deeds." Even when we temporarily forget this prayerful attitude the mark on another reminds us of our resolve. The tilak is thus a blessing of the Lord and a protection against wrong tendencies and forces.
The entire body emanates energy in the form of electromagnetic waves - the forehead and the subtle spot between the eyebrows especially so. That is why worry generates heat and
causes a headache. The tilak and pottu cools the forehead, protects us and prevents energy loss. Sometimes the entire forehead is covered with chandan or bhasma. Using plastic reusable "stick bindis" is not very beneficial, even though it serves the purpose of decoration.

Why do we not touch papers, books and people with the feet?
6. Why do we not touch papers, books and people with the feet?
To Indians, knowledge is sacred and divine. So it must be given respect at all times. Nowadays we separate subjects as sacred and secular. But in ancient India every subject - academic or spiritual - was considered divine and taught by the guru in the gurukula. The custom of not stepping on educational tools is a frequent reminder of the high position accorded to knowledge in Indian culture. From an early age, this wisdom fosters in us a deep reverence for books and education. This is also the reason why we worship books, vehicles and instruments once a year on Saraswathi Pooja or Ayudha Pooja day, dedicated to the Goddess of Learning. In fact, each day before starting our studies, we pray: Saraswati namasthubhyam Varade kaama roopini Vidyaarambham karishyaami Sidhirbhavatu me sadaa O Goddess Saraswati, the giver of Boons and fulfiller of wishes, I prostrate to You before starting my studies. May you always fulfill me?

To touch another with the feet is considered an act of misdemeanor. Why is this so
7. To touch another with the feet is considered an act of misdemeanor. Why is this so?
Man is regarded as the most beautiful, living breathing temple of the Lord! Therefore touching another with the feet is akin to disrespecting the divinity within him or her. This calls for an immediate apology, which is offered with reverence and humility.

Why do we apply the holy ash?
8। Why do we apply the holy ash?
The ash of any burnt object is not regarded as holy ash. Bhasma (the holy ash) is the ash from the homa (sacrificial fire) where special wood along with ghee and other herbs is offered as worship of the Lord. Or the deity is worshipped by pouring ash as abhisheka and is then distributed as bhasma. Bhasma is generally applied on the forehead. Some apply it on certain parts of the body like the upper arms, chest etc. Some ascetics rub it all over the body. Many consume a pinch of it each time they receive it. The word bhasma means, "that by which our sins are destroyed and the Lord is remembered.” Bha implied bhartsanam ("to destroy") and sma implies smaranam ("to remember"). The application of bhasma therefore signifies destruction of the evil and remembrance of the divine. Bhasma is called vibhuti (which means "glory") as it gives glory to one who applies it and raksha (which means a source of protection) as it protects the wearer from ill health and evil, by purifying him or her.
Homa (offering of oblations into the fire with sacred chants) signifies the offering or surrender of the ego and egocentric desires into the flame of knowledge or a noble and selfless cause. The consequent ash signifies the purity of the mind, which results from such actions.
Also the fire of knowledge burns the oblation and wood signifying ignorance and inertia respectively. The ash we apply indicates that we should burn false identification with the body and become free of the limitations of birth and death. This is not to be misconstrued as a morose reminder of death but as a powerful pointer towards the fact that time and tide wait for none.
Bhasma is specially associated with Lord Shiva who applies it all over His body. Shiva devotes apply bhasma as a tripundra. When applied with a red spot at the center, the mark symbolizes Shiva-Shakti (the unity of energy and matter that creates the entire seen and unseen universe).
Tryambakam yajaamahe Sugandhim pushtivardhanam Urvaa rukamiva bhandhanaan Mrytyor muksheeyamaa amrutaat
"We worship the three-eyed Lord Shiva who nourishes and spread fragrance in our lives. May He free us from the shackles of sorrow, change and death – effortlessly, like the fall of a rip brinjal from its stem."

Why do offer food to the Lord before eating it?
9. Why do offer food to the Lord before eating it?
Indians make an offering of food to the Lord and later partake of it as prasaada - a holy gift from the Lord. In our daily ritualistic worship (pooja) too we offer naivedyam (food) to the Lord.
The Lord is omnipotent and omniscient. Man is a part, while the Lord is the totality. All that we do is by His strength and knowledge alone. Hence what we receive in life as a result of our actions is really His alone. We acknowledge this through the act of offering food to Him. This is exemplified by the Hindi words "tera tujko arpan"– I offer what is Yours to You. Thereafter it is akin to His gift to us, graced by His divine touch.
Knowing this, our entire attitude to food and the act of eating changes. The food offered will naturally be pure and the best. We share what we get with others before consuming it. We do not demand, complain or criticise the quality of the food we get. We eat it with cheerful acceptance (prasaada buddhi).
Before we partake of our daily meals we first sprinkle water around the plate as an act of purification. Five morsels of food are placed on the side of the plate acknowledging the debt owed by us to the Divine forces (devta runa) for their benign grace and protection, our ancestors (pitru runa) for giving us their lineage and a family culture, the sages (rishi runa) as our religion and culture have been "realised", aintained and handed down to us by them, our fellow beings (manushya runa) who constitute society without the support of which we could not live as we do and other living beings (bhuta runa) for serving us selflessly.
Thereafter the Lord, the life force, who is also within us as the five life-giving physiological functions, is offered the food. This is done with the chant
praanaaya swaahaa, apaanaaya swaahaa, vyaanaaya swaahaa,
udaanaaya swaahaa, samaanaaya swaahaa, brahmane swaahaa After offering the food thus, it is eaten as prasaada - blessed food.

Why do we fast?
10। Why do we fast?
Most devout Indians fast regularly or on special occasions like festivals. On such days they do not eat at all, eat once or make do with fruits or a special diet of simple food. Fasting in Sanskrit is called upavaasa. Upa means "near" + vaasa means "to stay". Upavaasa therefore means staying near (the Lord), meaning the attainment of close mental proximity with the Lord. Then what has upavaasa to do with food? A lot of our time and energy is spent in procuring food items, preparing, cooking, eating and digesting food. Certain food types make our minds dull and agitated. Hence on certain days man decides to save time and conserve his energy by eating either simple, light food or totally abstaining from eating so that his mind becomes alert and pure. The mind, otherwise pre-occupied by the thought of food, now entertains noble thoughts and stays with the Lord. Since it is a self-imposed form of discipline it is usually adhered to with joy Also every system needs a break and an overhaul to work at its best. Rest and a change of diet during fasting is very good for the digestive system and the entire body. The more you indulge the senses, the more they make their demands. Fasting helps us to cultivate control over our senses, sublimate our desires and guide our minds to be poised and at peace. Fasting should not make us weak, irritable or create an urge to indulge later. This happens when there is no noble goal behind fasting. The Bhagavad-Gita urges us to eat appropriately - neither too less nor too much - yukta-aahaara and to eat simple, pure and healthy food (a saatvik diet) even when not fasting.
